After the Needle - Taking Care of Your Piercing

Piercing After Care
  • Piercings have a tendency to have a series of ups and downs during the healing period. Try to be patient maintaining proper after care to your piercing. Even if the piercing seems to be healed to you, it may not be, so follow these steps closely.

  • Body piercings need to be cleaned at least TWICE DAILY, EVERYDAY for the initial healing period using a mild ANTIBACTERIAL HANDSOAP (liquid Dial), oral piercings (lips & tongue) will also require rinsing with an ANTISEPTIC MOUTHWASH up to 5X A DAY. Using an anti-flammatory such as Motrin and Advil can help minimize swelling and discomfort. DO NOT CLEAN PIERCINGS WITH ALCOHOL, PEROXIDE, NEOSPORIN, BACTINE, OR ANY OTHER FIRST AID OTC MEDICINES. USING THESE PRODUCTS COULD CAUSE FURTHER PROBLEMS DURING THE HEALING PERIOD.

  • Before cleaning your piercing, wash hands thoroughly with liquid dial and hot water. NEVER touch the healing piercing with dirty hands. This is VITAL for avoiding infections.

  • Use a cotton swab to remove any stubborn crust, but DO NOT pick with your finger nails. Apply a small amount of antibacterial soap to the area. Cleanse the area & jewelry and gently spin the jewelry back and forth to work the cleaning solution to the inside of the piercing. You DO NOT need to spin the jewelry for the first few cleanings, but it is important afterwards.

  • Allow the soap to cleanse for a minute or so. Rinse thoroughly under running water or by splashing with water while rotating the jewelry back and forth to completely remove all soap residue.

  • Dry the area with a disposable paper product such as paper towels or tissues. DO NOT use cloth bath towels, they harbor bacteria.

What is normal?

  • Bleeding, bruising, discoloration, and/or swelling is NOT common. Any break in the skin, including a new piercing can bleed on & off for a couple days. These are NOT signs of complications or infection.

  • Some tenderness can be expected in the area. You may feel stinging, burning, and/or aching in the area for several days or longer. There may be some itching which indicates healing in the piercing.

  • A whitish, yellowish liquid that forms around the top of the piercing is perfectly normal and indicates a healing piercing.

Healing Times
**All times are approximate and very greatly from person to person**

  • Navel – 9 to 12 months. Depending on your cleaning routine.

  • Cartilage – including septums, tragus, rook, anti-tbagus, conch, etc. 4 to 9 months depending on placement, guage of jewelry and your cleaning routine.

  • Tongue – 6 to 8 weeks. Over sized jewelry is a must for the initial potential swelling period. Down size after a few weeks to a more comfortable jewelry size.

  • Labret & Lips – 2 to 4 months. Caring for with an antibacterial soap from the outside and from the inside.

  • Eyebrow – 6 to 8 weeks. Barbell or ring must allow room to properly clean, especially until it’s healed.

  • Nose – 2 to 4 weeks. Clean only outside of the piercing. Do not clean the inside of your nose with soap: your nose will naturally clean itself on the inside.

  • Ear lobes – 6 to 8 weeks. Do not use restrictive jewelry that you cannot properly clean. Especially during the initial healing time.
